Winter 2023

Born from experiments with Artificial Intelligence, Language Models, and Machine Learning offerings, Lopen explores the newly emerging intersectionality of computer and human art. From AI-generated samples and micro-snippets to misused voice models, the timbres are simultaneously both otherworldly and deeply human. Lead parts derived from a singing model trained on non-voice materials; fractals of percussion and synthetic bloops pulled randomized modular synthesizer soundscapes; beautifully bizarre Music LM-generated pad/woodwind hybrids; synth arpeggiators trying to keep up with information coming from an acoustic piano – these are just some of the explorations into a creative relationship with increasingly intelligent machines.

As always, beauty is in the imperfections – and AI need not be any different.
